NBC's Version of the Olympics BLOWS!

Okay, maybe I'll have a more profound entry next time. But I have to get this off my chest:

5029726Did the Olympic opening ceremonies aired on NBC make you want to slash your wrists too?

If there's one thing I hate, it's the pairing of Katie Couric with Bob Costas and their goddamned Parade Chatter with a good health dose of Fear-Mongering, ("So back to the opening ceremony, where millions of dollars were put into ensuring everyone's safety from attacks... and nothing fortunately has gone wrong yet.") The comments that came out of their yaps made me briefly mute the show. Why can't they air the same show on one of NBC's cable channels without the chatter? Just a live, no-commentary feed of the actual event? PLEASE!

The worst was the song by Bjork. Don't get me wrong, I admire Bjork as an artist and love her voice. The torture came from the commentary again. Katie and Bob brought up that damned Swan Dress that Bjork wore to the Oscars a few years back... and then making fun of her dress for this show... which represented the ocean, flowing over the athletes. It was a pretty amazing visual, if they actually would have shown it... or allowed the music to be heard over their banter. Thankfully, the NY Times Magazine features some downright beautiful shots of the charming Bjork.

All that talk made me wonder if I actually missed most of the show? Apparently, I did (according to Andy). From what I have read, apparently we Americans missed A LOT. You see, we apparently can't even handle the sculpture that makes up so much of Greece's visual history. I guess NBC felt that this was just too many fake penii to bring into your living room... or was it that they were afraid John Ashcroft might be watching?

Since when did we, Americans become that embarassed by the human form? Particularly the form of an athlete? Honestly!

Oh well, I still thought the slightly creepy, bic-lighter/War of the Worlds/Giant Robotic Cock/Athens torch was so crazy-ass to me... it was cool. But in my opinion, still didn't quite top the drama of the Sydney torch lighting. Now that rocked.
